What is the La Partage rule?

We look at one of the most favourable rules of any roulette game - the famous La Partage from French Roulette.

The La Partage rule is a popular feature that is included in many European and French roulette games. On an even money bet, you can have half your stake returned if the ball lands in the green zero pocket.

This is one of the most player friendly rules out there - as it reduces the house edge. Here is a comparison of roulette wheels and the house edge.

  • American Roulette: 5.26% house edge
  • European Roulette: 2.70% house edge
  • European Roulette with La Partage rule: 1.35%

As you can see, choosing a table with La Partage halves the house edge vs a standard European Roulette table. The house edge is almost reduced by a quarter when compared to an American Roulette table.

The La Partage rule is non-existent at American land casinos unless you visit dedicated single zero tables. In November 2019, Plaza Hotel and Casino did open the first single zero roulette table in downtown Las Vegas. But it is not played with La Partage rules.

La Partage Roulette Online

The La Partage rule is not isolated to land based roulette games. French roulette games found at online casinos can also include the La Partage rule. Here are some of the most popular games to try:

Live dealer casino games also have their versions of La Partage roulette games. Evolution Live and Playtech both have dedicated French Roulette games that feature this popular game rule.

History of La Partage

It is accepted that Blaise Pascal created the first roulette wheel in the 17th century. But the French mathematician did not invent the La Partage rule. It is unknown who invented the rule - or why it was invented in the first place.

Theories suggest that to stay competitive, Parisian casinos introduced two new rules. One was La Partage - and the other was En Prison.

Both rules were attractive, as it meant better returns for players and a lower house edge. It is said that the rules were introduced in the 18th century.

What is En Prison?

En Prison is a complimentary rule to La Partage. If you place an even money bet and the ball lands in the zero pocket, then you will have the option to put the bet "in prison" . If your next bet wins, you receive back your imprisoned bet. For this reason, it's rare to find any sort of online game that offers this rule.

La Partage Roulette Strategy

There is only one way to play a roulette game with the La Partage roulette rule: bet on even money bets exclusively. These may not provide the biggest payout - but they are the safest betting positions on the betting table. For clarity, here are all the even money betting positions:

  • Red / Black
  • Odds / Even
  • 1 to 18 / 19 to 36

Bets on any other position will not be able to take advantage of La Partage, voiding this unique rule.
